THE COMPLETE CHURCH ORGANIST: ORGAN ÉTUDES BOOK ONE AVE MARIA
The first half is on the Annunciation Gospel text, and the second half requests Mary’s prayers for us. There is an exchange of plainsong theme and moto perpetuo accompaniment on the join. A thin, glittery sound is intended, portraying the hovering presence of Gabriel.
The fingering is designed to increase your flexibility in positioning, and to equalize the capability of all fingers in a true legato touch. Mentally, this trains you to keep long fingers over flats whilst thumbs are on naturals, favouring key-signature-shaped hands; and it trains you to remember accidentals out of context. A brief example of hand- crossing also trains the brain to cope. Take it very slowly at first to check for accuracy, and build familiarity with the irregular patterns. Don’t lessen the abruptness of the ending - “the angel departed from her” we read, and with that the reality took effect – and the shocking message still shocks.
