THE COMPLETE CHURCH ORGANIST: ORGAN ÉTUDES BOOK ONE IN DULCI JUBILO
A spring-loaded, joyous dance in accordance with the title, this needs neat, crisp chords released exactly together. Re-shape your hand quickly between chords to avoid tension and wrong notes, and keep a loose wrist with curved, springy fingers. Learn it all on one manual at first and then teach yourself to hop between them without checking by eye. The precise articulation chosen depends on the acoustic of the building and response-time of the action but, in general, aim for a whole bar as the phrase-unit, detaching as needed within that to render reiterations - and to clear the air for the crazy key-changes. Mentally, take note of the fingering method where indicated for use in other contexts.
True staccato won’t be adequate alone; you need deliberate detaching on crotchets where applicable, and short staccato on quavers and weak beats to create the dancing effect.
