Two-Part Anthems
edited by
Philip Moore
In 1962 I bought a copy of Francis Jackson’s Hereford Service, a work in two parts, with the sopranos and tenors singing an octave apart and the altos and basses singing likewise. Ever since then I have been fascinated by this disposition of voices. Other composers have adopted this approach, none more poignantly, perhaps, than in some of the choruses in Michael Tippett’s A Child of our Time.
My own efforts in writing in two parts have shown me that it is a highly effective way of writing, offering choirs a variety of ways in which to perform the anthems. We hope that this collection of anthems, mostly for upper and lower voices, will appeal to choirs of all abilities. They can be sung, for example, by sopranos and altos only, or tenors and basses only. If you have an SATB choir, the effects of such writing are warm and sonorous.
However you perform these lovely pieces, we hope you will enjoy singing them.
