In the early 1490s Richard Davy was choirmaster at Magdalen College, Oxford. Where he went thereafter has yet to be established, but there was a vicar-choral of the same name at Exeter between about 1495 and 1507 and another at Fotheringhay from about 1512 until 1538. His music seems to have remained in the repertory for over thirty years, from his Oxford days until the late 1520s. He has been unfairly characterised as a facile and flashy composer: an assessment belied by the restraint and poignancy of this setting evoking Mary’s experience as a witness of her son’s Passion.
