Introduction

This is a very simple plainsong-like setting of the responses to be sung in unison.  The congregation is reminded of the notes to be used for each response immediately before singing them, then sings back the response to the same tune (rather like an echo), using the same notes that the cantor has just sung.  The range is small and the starting note can be varied to accord with what is most comfortable for the cantor (and everyone else!).  Don’t start too high!  Or too low!  (N.B. The cantor must work out the most comfortable starting note beforehand, and use a tuning fork or phone ‘app’ to find it, if there is no instrument available).

Teaching it to the congregation

An open invitation could be issued to come to a short rehearsal starting, say, 15 minutes before the service.  So long as there are a couple of reasonably confident singers in the congregation to lead, and an encouraging cantor, it should be possible to use this setting ‘straight out of the box’ after one run-through.  Those who have not been to the rehearsal will gradually catch on.
