The seven items comprise five voluntaries on familiar Christmas tunes and two on the Epiphany hymns 'As with gladness' and 'Songs of thankfulness and praise' (Dix and St Edmund). These are well-crafted pieces, perhaps a little too overcrowded with notes, but interesting. ' Silent night' is quite tricky, with a pedal part (8 ft only) proceeding in parallel tenths for the flrst 17 bars. The manual parts combine 'The first Nowell' with 'Silent Night', which works surprisingly well. There is pleasing setting of Est ein Ros entsprungen as well pieces on 'O come, all ye faithful' and 'A Child is born' . An enjoyable book, well worth a try. Trevor Webb
