Victimae Paschali is intended to be sung after the New Testament reading on Easter Sunday, immediately before The Gospel Acclamation (Alleluia) and Gospel.
This setting was written for use in Westminster Cathedral.
It may be rendered with one or two organs, but the choir organ part is not written for a chamber organ and should be coloured with a well supported and majestic sound with pedals.
The chant is to be sung in a declamatory and robust style without affection but gently nuanced by word accents and hemiolas. The musical gestures in the accompaniment are heavily shaped by the text.
